Question
3.Based upon the definition of biotechnology in the assignment, describe how your biotechnology application is an example of biotechnology.4.What benefits are derived from this application?
5.Are there any concerns or negative impacts associated with this use of biotechnology? Why or why not?
Provide references in APA format. This includes a reference list and in-text citations for references used throughout the assignment.
Important: Each person in the class should choose a DIFFERENT biotechnology application. Read other students' posts first to see what they have selected and choose a different biotechnology application.
Explanation / Answer
The more about embryonic stem cells: Pluripotentcells are capable of differentiating into any of the germ layers and the germ line, but they are not usually capable of producing extra-embryonic tissue. An exception is that the tetraploid cellproduced by combining a somatic cell and an embryonic cell can produce this extra tissue, but it does not contribute to the embryo. The level above pluripotent stem cells is totipotent which can form the entire organism, and level below pluripotent is multipotent stem cells as in hematopoetic stem cells able to produce the components in the blood. Unipotent cell are only able to differentiate into a single type of cell as in the case of spermatogonial stem cells. All of these levels contribute to the development and the life of the organism. An interesting though controversial concept is trans differentiation in which stem cells sidestep their primary cell lineage and produce cells outside of what this level system presupposes. More on my ipsc talk These stem cells can be made through a multitude of various nuclear programming methods and derived from many somatic cell types. These cells can self renew and proliferate for our purposes whether they be research to discover new possibilities, diagnostics to determine the course of treatment needed, and of course be a regenerative form of treatment. For sickle cell anemia these cells would provide blood cells to produce functional physiological improvement, in Parkinson's disease these cells would provide dopamine production resulting in symptomatic improvement, and concerning Hemophilia A these cells would result in decreased clotting time and increased survival rates. 3. Cells help humans as already said. 4. Bone marrow and those just stated. 5.Rejection, moral (not much in the case of ipsc's or adult stem cells in general), tumors, cancer
