Organizations Help Wadi el-Natrun is a basin in the Western Desert of Egypt west of the Nile's Delta and about 100 km northwest of Cairo. This below-sea-level valley is dotted with many lakes fed by the Nile's water table that give the valley its name. It comes from the Latin name of sodium (natrium) because those lakes are highly alkaline and rich with sodium carbonat or Natron. This alkaline salt combination was essential for mummification. The valley was later known for the role it played in early Christianity and more recently as the place where Antoine de Saint Exupéry crushed-landed his airplane and gave the inspiration of - not again!- the "Little Prince" Enough chit-chat. Those alkaline lakes (pH of about 10.5) are home to few well-adapted organisms that can survive the harsh conditions.
