Question
List and describe one process for each of the following sources that could be eroding the beach. onshore, naturally occurring on land or around the shoreline offshore, naturally occurring out at sea, away from the shoreline anthropogenic, influenced or altered by people Read about beach renourishment on the Florida Departement of Environmental Protection website. How much does a beach renourishment cost? In your opinion, is beach renourishment effective in decreasing beach erosion and worth the investment? Explain your reasoning.Explanation / Answer
Beach Erosion- As we know that beach is a depositional feature. Sediment derived from land (Terrigeous)and rewash by the waves at shelf.
So there are two type of beach erosion first one is Natural and second is anthropogenitically.
Natural Erosion- The Natural erosion happen because of storm like tsunami, cyclonic strenthening, small scale storm and neotectonic activity.
In neotectonic latest reactivation of any fault or seismocity generated near by the area. it can be occur in deep sea generates the tsunami and also occur near the coast affect the beach morphology.
So in coastal area if coast got emergence by small scale tectonics and river feel rejuvanated near coast and deposite lots of sediment on shelf because local sea level feel retreat (down) and erosion happens.
Anthropogenic or human induced erosion-- As we know that modern man thinking about climate change, because man also responsible for their earlier activity regarding imbalance the nature processess. by the construction and mining activity near by beach is responsible for destruction of beaches globaly. Other anthropological effects that trigger beach erosion are offshore dredging.
Human influence, particularly urbanization and economic activities, in the coastal zone has turned coastal erosion from a natural phenomenon into a problem of growing intensity. Human intervention can alter these natural processes through the following actions:
Beach renourishment effective in decreasing beach erosion and worth the investment--
There are many way to decraese the beach erosion-
(1)Sea wall/ Revetment:
Seawall may be useful in case of protection of specific area from erosion and storm surges. Adverse effect is experienced on downstream side.
(2)Groins-. Groynes are adopted to stop or decrease shoreline recession and for beach formation. They are built approximately at right angles to the beach. The aim of groynes is to trap material moving long shore to buildup the level of the beach. However, extremely adverse effects are observed on downstream side and groynes should be avoided unless their main purpose is to keep a beach at one particular position at the cost of adjoining areas.
(3)Vegetation cover-Vegetation encourages dune growth by trapping and stabilizing blown sand. Vegetation cover can restrict sand movement and erosion such as mangrove and Palm plantation.Transplanting vegetation will not prevent erosion, but it will accelerate natural recovery after storm damage creating a reservoir of sand within the fore dunes that will make the dunes better able to withstand the next period of erosion.
(4) Geotextile tubes-That is kind of tube constructed near baech that reduced the erosion
(5) Gabion Revetement- Putting lots of rock buolder and abovr that net usred with basement that also reduced the erosion.
