What conclusion has been drawn by many astronomers when they find that the calculated mass of a galaxy is always larger than the mass of stars and interstellar matter detectable from optical, infrared and radio telescopes? b. What observational evidence led to this conclusion? //201
Explanation / Answer
The conclusion is that there is a lot more mass than can be detected this mass has been called "dark matter".
Observational evidence like for instance the orbital velocities of stars in the Milky Way, or the rotational speed of galaxies or the degree of gravitational lensing can't be accounted for by the detectable mass. Even though maps have been made of the distribution of where this dark matter shold be, dark matter has not been directly observed.
