Describe your impressions of the article on technology and overpopulation. What school of thought are you most comfortable with and why; the bigger pie school, the fewer forks school, or the better manners school?
Briefly describe your impressions of the arcology website and video. How does this theory deal with the issue of population? Do any of the new projects appear to solve the problems associated with overpopulation?
Explanation / Answer
The economists says that, increasing population doesn't have any effect on scarcity of resources. Infact they think that with the increasing population the resources are also increasing. They say this because according to them the standard of living of people has improved and it will be even better for the future generation.
On the other hand some think that this thoery cannot be correct, because this is not possible. They say this because it is not possible that the resources will increase with more people using them continuously.
The better manners school thinks about every individual in the society. They want that the inequality in the society should not be there and everyone should be treated equally. The inequality in income has to be eliminated. They also say that the prices of goods should be more rational.
Arcology:
An arcology is a huge structure housing a self-sustaining community isolated from the rest of the world. It includes residential, commercial and agricultural facilities. It allows its residents to live a comfortable life without any interference of the urban infrastructure.
Arcology is extremely difficult to be build in the real world. Because we donot have the required technology for building arcology. Arcology is a self sustainable structure where people will get everything inside the structure and they will not have to go out the structure for anything. These structres are constructed on a small piece of land and therefore it solves the problem of over population.
There are many projects going on around the world. They are trying to make an arcology structure so that the problem of overpopulation can be solved.
The project in the Masdar city is build to accomodate around 50000 people in an area of just 6 square kilometers which definitely solves the overpopulation problem. In this project the biological and industrial waste will be reused to fertilize crops.
