Question
The similarities between white, African American and Hispanic immigrants are similar in the aspect that all of these groups wanted to come to the United States. Reasons being a better quality of life, education for their children, employment opportunities, access to quality healthcare, religious freedom and dreams of citizenship. The differences vary greatly. White immigrants seem to have a smooth transition, speaking English, having family to live with upon arrival and help with employment. According to the textbook, the impact of immigration on African Americans deserves special attention. There is evidence that African Americans are offered lower paying jobs and jobs in undesirable employment sectors. Hispanics have a more difficult time due to the language barrier, English not being their primary language. Finding employment, reading documentation and filling out forms is difficult to navigate when they do not understand the language. The challenges these ethnic groups face speaking languages other than English, especially in school, can be very taxing. A student may fall behind in the curriculum due to the language barrier. A student cannot learn if he or she cannot comprehend the language. As far as the workplace, not being able to speak English may result in fewer job opportunities and lower wages. Personally, I work with many people who speak many different languages. In healthcare, not every person who walks into a hospital situation speaks English. I find that working with people who speak a different language is very beneficial to the patient. In 5-6 lines what is true and what do you agreed with this passage?
