Question
The presences of the radioactive gas radon (Rn) in well water presented a possible health hazard in the parts of the United States. a) Assuming that the solubility of radon in water in equilibrium with 1 atm of radon pressure is 7.27E-3 M at 30*C, what water at this temperature? b) A sample consisting of a variety of gases including radon is equilibrated with water at 30°C. The mole fraction of radon in the mixture is 3.5E-6, and the total pressure of the gas is 32 atm. Calculate the molar concentration of radon in the water. 2. is the Henry's Law constant for radon irnExplanation / Answer
2. By using Henry's laaw,
a) SRn = kPRn
k =7.27*10-3 M/1atm
= 7.27*10-3 M/atm
b) First calculate the partial pressure of Rn
PRn = RnPT
Where PT is the total pressure =32atm
mole fraction of Rn =3.5x10-6
PRn =3.5x10-6 * 32atm = 1.12*10-4atm
Now u have to calculate molarconc of Rn that is SRn
SRn = kPRn
=7.27*10-3 M/atm * 1.12*10-4atm
=8.14*10-7M
