Question
The preparation of phenylmagnesium bromide from bromobenzene and magnesium metal is an example of an oxidation reduction reaction. Which species is oxidized and what is reduced?Explanation / Answer
Hi, i didn't see the posted answer, so i didn't know that itbecame a blank answer... [here is the answer] The reaction that is going to takes place is : PhBr + Mg----> PhMgBr Now in PhBr, oxidation state of Ph group is +1 where as in PhMgBr(which dissociates like Ph- , MgBr+) Ph has -1 oxidation state (Ph means Phenyl group) => Ph group has been reduced and regarding Mg it's oxidation state changes from 0 to +2 =>increase in oxidation state => oxidation so Phenyl group is Reduced and Mg isOxidized
