The Hawaiian Islands are of volcanic origin, generated by a Hot Spot under the Pacific crust. The big island of Hawaii is the most recently formed in the chain of islands. There are three volcanoes on the big island, the Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea.

1) Is any of these volcanoes currently erupting on a regular basis?

2) Look at a map of the island. Do you see a correlation between the date of the most recent eruption and the location of the volcano on the island? Explain your reasoning.

3) A newly discovered volcano is slowly forming the Lo’ihi seamount, South-East of Hawaii. Are you surprised?

4) Do you expect this to be a shield volcano, like the other islands? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

1- kilauea is considered one of the worlds most frequently active volcanoes ,there have been 62 erruption in 245 years, there was a active lava lake in the summit caldera from at least 1823 untill 1924, while at the same time eruptions would take place elsewhere on the flanks of the volcano. and the recent erruption was 2011 which is non continues

2- i think theres no such correlation may be there is but not according to me. but lava in most recent erruption is active before 7 month ago and may be it is activly moving presntly too.after erruption this activty is recorded before seven month ago.

3- in such areas having the largest volanos this type of formation do take place mostly and easily because of the fair condition there so there is no surprize in that.since 1983 arround 500 acre of new land has been added in kilauea so its not surprising.

4- this one is an submarine volcano,unlike most of the other huwaiian volcanos,it may be a shield volcano because this seamount lies on the flank of mauna loa, the largest shield volcano on earth , and loihi is the only hawaiian volcano in the deep submarine preshield stage of devlopment.
