The balanced chemical equation
H2SO4(aq) + 2 NaOH(aq) = Na2SO4(aq) + 2 H2O(l)
Moles of NaOH = molarity x volume
= 0.400 mol/L x 0.075 L = 0.03 mol
Mass of NaOH = 0.03 mol x 40g/mol = 1.2 g
Molarity of H2SO4
= molarity of NaOH x volume of NaOH/volume of H2SO4
= 0.4 x 75/55
= 0.545 M
Moles of H2SO4 = 0.545 x 0.055 = 0.03 moles
Mass of H2SO4 = 0.03 moles x 98g/mol = 2.94 g
Total mass = 1.2 + 2.94 = 4.14 g
Heat produced =- (total mass × specific heat capacity × change in temperature)
= - (4.14 g x 4.184 J/g·C x 12.4C)
= - 214.78 J
Moles of H2O produced
= 0.03 mol NaOH x 2 mol H2O/2 mol NaOH
= 0.03 mol H2O
H neutral = heat produced / H2O produced
= - 214.78 J/0.03 mol
= - 7159.66 J/mol
= - 7.159 kJ/mol
