Question

Reading Read Appendix B in this lab manual to learn about scientific graphing * Ethanol is the alcohal in alcoholic beverages like beer and wine. At room t 8/ml while water's density is 0.997 g/mt. When a few milizers of ethanol are added to water A student is given an unknown lquid at room temperature and g/mL is the l water? Expiain. 1. temperature, ethanol's density is 0.789 the two liquids mix experimmentaly determines its density to be 0.947 iquid is pure ethanol, pure water, or a mixture? If it is a misture, does it contain more ethanol or more 2. What is the difference between density and specific gravity? 3. List the features of a properly constructed scientific graph

Explanation / Answer

1.As at the room temperature, the student finds the density of unknown liquid to be 0.947g/ ml so it has to be mixture of ethanol and water as the density lies between the densities of ethanol and Water. As the density of the mixture is close to that of water so amount of water in the mixture will be more as compared to that of ethanol.

2, Density of any substance is defined as mass of the substance per unit volume of it while specific density of any substance is defined as the ratio of density of substance at particular tempreature to density of water at that same temperature.

Density has units such as g/ml ,kg/m3etc while specific density is unitless as it is a ratio.

3.Features of properly constructed scientific graphs is as follows

It should have

- Title
- axes
- x-axis title
- y-axis title
- x- axis scale
- y-axis scale
- points plotted
- line or curve of best fit
