I. + 1. II. +2 I. + 2, II. +2 I. + 1, II. + 3 I. +3, II. +2 I. +2, II. +1 Predict the product for the following reaction. I II III IVExplanation / Answer
(1). 3,4,5-Timethyl-2-hexanol.
First look for the longest alkyl chain, then see for the functional group. Here -OH (alcohol functional group) is present on left side 2nd carbon, so give the numbering from left side.
As we move from left to right look for the substituents (here methyl groups are there on 3,4,5 caarbons).
(2). B
Her the cyclo pentane ring is the base for naming. There are two substituents on it, one is -OH and another is alkyl. We should give priority to the functional group (same as we have done in 1)
(3). C
If "O" is attached ti "C" then C will get +1 oxidation state (C-O, based on electronegativity)
If it is C=O the C is having +2 oxidation state
If it is C-H then C will have -1 oxidation state
If it is C-C the C will have "zero" oxidation state for this bond
In the first molecule there are 2 C-O bonds (O-2) and one C-H bond (H+1)
Now to neutralise the charges -2 and +1 we should have +1, which is the oxidation of C in the 1st molecule.
(4). C (III)
H2, Pd reduces C-C multiple bonds readily then the functional group (-CHO) too.
