Goya was a a spanish painter and printmaker. He was the one of the most succesful and popular artist of late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was also a commentor and chronicler of his era. Also he was one of the great portraitist of his time. In beginning of his career he became a court painter. He make portraits of spanish royalty and aristocracy. He also designed cartoons for the royal palace.
Disaster of war series is a series of about 82 prints that was painted by Goya between 1810-1820. During the time when there were conflicts between Napolean's french Empire and Spain, Goya got a position of court painter. He used to portray French and Spanish ruler. Though he was deeply affected by the war but he kept his thought in private on the art which he produced on conflicts and his aftermath. He was in poor health when he began working on the prints. These prints were not published until 35 years after his death. In this he critisized the French and the bourbon. In this prints etching was used for the line work and the aquatint was used for the tonal work was used. The series were presented in 3 groups. The first 47 prints war and their consequences on soldier and civilian were shown. The middle series show the famine effect that hit Madrid in 1811-1812 before the city was liberated from French. The last one show the disappointment of liberals when the bourban monarchy was restored.
Goya made 14 paintings in his later years of life between 1819-1823. These paintings were known as black paintings. The theme of the paintings were intense and haunting and these reflect insanity and his outlook on humanity. He used oils to paint them directly on the plaster walls of his home which means that he painted for himself not for others. These paintings were known as black paintings since there were mainly dark tones and use of black. He painted after he recovered from his illness. He painted witches and visions of evil spirits in his room.
