Question
The single equilibrium equation applies to different phenomena. CH_3COOH + H_2O leftrightarrow H_3O^+ + CH_3COO^- From the following four phenomena Ionization of pure acide common-ion effect buffer solution hydrolysis indicate which phenomenon will occurs (explain your answer) if [H_3O^+] and [CH_3COOH] are high but [CH_3COO^-] is very low. [CH_3COO] is high, but [CH_3COOH] and [H_3O^+] are very low. [CH3COOH] is high, but [H3O+] and [CH3COO-] are low. [CH_3COOH] and [CH_3COO^-] are high but [H_3O^+] is low.Explanation / Answer
I Hydrolysis will take place in such a case because more hydronium ions will be produced but this will happend in case of strong acids. Also the concentration of acetic acid will be high in such a case.
II Common ion effect for example if the acetic acid contains an acetate ion and Sodium acetate also contain acetate ion so in that case overall CH3COO- concentration will be high.
III Ionization of pure acid. As in this case the acetic acid is a very acid so it will not completely dissociate in to ions and hence the concentrations of H3O+ and CH3COO- is very low and CH3COOH is high.
IV Buffer solution is formed in such a case because it is from an acid and its conjugate base.
