Question
A mixture of 60 mole % Toluene and 40 mole % Cyclohexane is distilled through a simple distillation apparatus. The boiling temperature is found to be 100 degree C as the first amount of distillate is collected. The standard vapor pressure of Toluene and Cyclohexane are known to be 436 mmHg and 1732 mmHg, respectively, at 100 degree C. Calculate the percentage of each of the two compounds in the first few drops of distillate. The top of the mercury bulb of the thermometer placed at the head of a distillation apparatus should be adjacent to the exit opening to the condenser. Explain the effect on the observed temperature reading if the bulb is placed: Below the opening to the condenser Above the opening to the condenserExplanation / Answer
At T=100 oC , total pressure = 760 mm Hg
So,
760 mm Hg = x1P1sat + x2P2sat
760 mm Hg = x1P1sat + (1-x1 )P2sat
760 mm Hg = x1 436+ (1-x1 )1732
On solving,
x1 = 0.75 and x2 = 0.25
Thus cocn of toluene = 0.75
Conc of cyclohexane = 0.25
