Question
Being Wrong, Ch. 4 Light bulb Memories, page 71-86
Light bulb memories are vivid, intense, and are remembered for a long time. Studies have shown that even these memories are riddled with errors. Nevertheless we feel that our lightbulb memories ARE without ANY DOUBT RIGHT.
Page 74, "How can we square this feeling of rightness with the very real possibility that we are wrong?"
Page 75, "Every generations cutting-edge technology has been pressed into service to symbolize the workings of memory. . . We speak of our computers has having memory, and of our memories as being like computers." This recording device model of memory is wrong.
Page 76, Suppose that "instead of pulling our memories out of storage . . , we rebuild them afresh every time we need them, then vividness could be a feature that we build in to some memories."
Page 77, "Confabulation is a manifestation of our unstoppable drive to tell stories that make sense of our world."
Page 78, "Imagine, by way of analogy, that each of us has an inner writer and an inner fact-checker."
Schultz argues that each of us has an internal confabulator and an internal fact checker. The confabulator and fact checker work together to write a plausible story. Confabulator begins devising a story, while the fact checker institutes a number of constraints.
Choose TRUE if the fact checker does this and choose TRUE if this is what Schultz says.
Choose FALSE if the fact checker does NOT do this and choose FALSE if this is NOT what Schultz says.
