Question

Does BaF2 or OF2 have a higher vapor pressure? I said it was BaF2 but I think I may be wrong. Do you look the the intermolecular forces? OF2 has 2 lone pairs so I thought it was polar covalent. BaF2 didn't have any lone pairs so I said it was linear. So does that mean OF2 has stronger bonds and a lower vapor pressure and BaF2 has a higher vapor pressure? If not, why? Thank you! Explanation / Answer

Weaker the intermolecular forces the higher the vapor pressure.

Electronegativity of Ba is lower than O. So, in case of BaF2, there is a strong dipole-dipole force as compared to OF2.

Dipole-dipole force is stronger than London-dispersion force.

So, intermolecular forces is stronger in BaF2 than OF2.

Hence OF2 have higher vapor pressure.
