Question
Lithium nitride reacts with water to produce ammonia and lithium hydroxide according to the equation, Heavy water is water with the isotope deuterium in place of ordinary hydrogen, and its formula is D2O. The above reaction can be used to produce heavy ammonia. ND_3(g). according to the equation. Calculate how many grams of heavy water are required to produce 125.0 mg of ND_3(g). The mass of deuterium, D, is 2.014 g/mol. The concept of determining which reactant is limiting and which is in excess is akin to determining the number of sandwiches that can be made from a set number of ingredients. Assuming that a cheese sandwich consists of 2 slices of bread and 3 slices of cheese, determine the number of whole cheese sandwiches that can be prepared from 28 slices of bread and 51 slices of cheese. Which of the two ingredients limits the number of sandwiches that can be made? What quantity of the ingredient in excess remains?Explanation / Answer
A.
given weight of ND3 = 125mg = 0.125 grams
number of moles of ND3 = 0.125 / 20.042 = 0.00623 moles
from the reaction
1 moles of ND3 is formed from 3 moles of heavy water
then 0.00623 moles of ND3 is formed from (3 * 0.00623) = 0.0187 moles od heavy water.
therfore weight of heavy water = 0.0187mole * 20.028g/mol = 0.3745 grams.
B.
each sandwich shold contains 2 slices of bread and 3 slices of cheese
we have 28 slices of bread i.e, we can prepare 14 sandwiches with 28 pieces of bread
we have 51 slices of cheese i.e., we can prepare 17 sandwiches with 51 pieces of cheese
here limiting slices are bread
so we can prepare only 14 sandwiches with 14 pieces of bread and 14 pieces of cheese.
we have 9 slices of cheese as excess
