Question
1 list 3 factors which affect d discharge of ions during electrolysis ii 0.45g of a metal (M) was deposited wen a current of 1.8A was passed for 12.5minutes through a solution containing 2 positive ions or charge calculate d relative atomic mass of M (1F 96500) iii. Give reasons why copper plated iron corrodes when the surface is scratched. iv classify each of the following as strong electrolyte and weak electrolyte, potassium chloride, sodium ethanoate, aqueous ammonia, sugar Cane 1b explain the following observation in the electrolysis of cus04 why the blue colour fades with platinum electrode why the colour intensity is unaffected with copper electrode datz number 1.Explanation / Answer
1. (i) Discharge of ions during electrolysis is affected by, current apllied, the time of electrolysis, electrode type, posiiton of metal in electrochemical series and the concentration.
(ii) Molar mass of metal
= 0.45 x 96500 x 2/1.8 x 12.5 x 60
= 64.33 g/mol
(iii) when scratched, we expose the surface of iron to atmosphere. Iron being more reactive as it is above Cu in electrochemical series, readily oxidizes and forms layer of iron oxide on the surface as a process of corrossion.
1b. The blue color fades as Cu2+ is reduced in presence of platinum electrode to metaliz Cu. this reaction does not occur with Cu electrode in place in solution.
2 (ii) time for Ag deposition = 0.780 x 96500 x 1/108 x 0.2 = 3485 s
Amount of Cu deposited = 0.2 x 3485 x 63.5/96500 x 2 = 0.23 g
