Question

How would your results have been effected if: (provide an explanation for each answer) each of the flasks you used for the standardization of NaOH had initially turned pink with the addition of phenolphthalein but the color disappeared when you added KHP to each (you did not rinse the flasks and start over)? there was still visible, undissolved KHP in the bottom of each flask when you finished with your titration? you stopped the titration immediately after the solution first became pink (the color disappeared almost immediately)?

Explanation / Answer

Q1

a

if you did not clean it, then some reactant already reacted, meaning that there was some base left... that is, the sample is contaminated and not all acid is actually ready to react

b

if it is undissolved, then it is not in solution, it will not react as an acid, since the definition of acid is any specie that donates H+ in aqueous solution, but it is in solid state

c

You are stopping before the indicator states that ALL th esolution is neutralized

if some pink appears, this means that the local point is basic, but in general, the solution is not...
