Question
It is speculated that combat is uniquely suited for its buological role in cobalamins due to the availability of the three adjacent oxidation states how does this situation compare with the oxidation states utilized by iron in nature? Give four examples. It is speculated that combat is uniquely suited for its buological role in cobalamins due to the availability of the three adjacent oxidation states how does this situation compare with the oxidation states utilized by iron in nature? Give four examples.Explanation / Answer
1) Fe2+ to Fe3+ in hemoglobin before and after oxygen binding respectively. The affinity for oxygen depends on the pH and concentration of CO2 around which is an essential factor for transport. The oxygen should bind with Hb in lungs and have to be released in tissues
2) Oxygen storage by Myoglobin. There is high affinity of MB towards oxygen that helps in storage and under conditions will be released
3) Can exhibit oxidation state ranging from +2 to +5 as in the case of Cytochrome P450 which are involved in electron transfer chain
4) Ferredoxin - Fe- Sulfur proteins that are involved in electron transfer. These are termed biological capacitors that can accept or discharge electrons with the effect of a change in oxidation state between +2 and +3.
