Why is it important to decrease the level of greenhouse gases in the Earth's 3. a. What is the Kyoto Protocol? (2 marks) atmosphere? (3 marks) Canada has set up various initiatives in an attempt to meet the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. Discuss in a 1 to 2-page report (single spaced, size 12 font) the effectiveness of such initiatives. You may choose to focus on one particular initiative, or several of them. (10 marks) Which kind of diaper creates more air pollution: disposable or cloth?

Explanation / Answer

2. The green house gases are carbon dioxide which causes global warming and acid rain in the atmosphere. Its always desirable to decrease the green house gases to reduce the adverse effects caused by the gas.

3.

(a) Kyoto protocol: The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement taken jointly by several nations. It is associated to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It aims to set internationally binding emission reduction targets.

(b) Canada took steps to reduce the emission to meet the requirements of Kyoto protocol:

1. Carbon monooxide, carbon disoxide, sulfer dioxides are emitted from the automobile engines due to combustion of fuels. Government of Canada instructs to use catalytic converter in the cars. The catalyti converters convert the toxic pollutant gases to non-toxic harmless gases before emitted to air. Thus the emission of toxic gases can be reduced.

2. The increase in concentration of greenhouse gases in atmosphere in mainly caused by deforestation. Canada has made policies to minimize deforestation.

4.

Disposable diapers causes more air pollution than cloth diapers.

Diapers can be two types: 1. cloth or 2. synthetic disposable materials. Cloth diapers are composed of layers of fabric made of materials like cotton.

Disposable diapers contain absorbent chemicals and are thrown away after use.The absorbent chemicals emit toxic vapours to air and hence the disposable diapers are more harmful for air.
