Problem 5 The figures below show two different situations where a current may be induced in a loop by Faraday's Law, with the direction determined by Lenz Law. The magnetic field is shown by the x's in Fig.2. Choose true or false for each statement for the current in the loop. (The compass directions are defined in the usual way.) N S fig 1 9 x x b fig 2 False fig2: Loop moving North, induced current b. False figl: Magnet moving East, induced current b. alse igl: Loop moving West, induced current b True figl: Magnet moving West, induced current a. True fig2: Loop moving East, induced current b. False fig2: Loop moving South, induced current a. Due in 3 hours, 15 minutes

Explanation / Answer

1. Flux linked with the loop will not change if it is moved north. Hence no current will be induced

2.when magnet is moved east, magnetic flux linked with the coil will decrease. To maintain the flux initially linked towards west, clockwise current or current a has to flow.

3.here loop is moving away from the manet .hence flux will decrease. So current a will flow.

4. If magnet move west, flux will increase. To decrease this increasing flux, counterclockwise current has to flow.so current b will flow.

5.when loop moves east, there is constant magnetic field.hence linked flux will not change and so no current will flow.

6. Same scenerio as part 1. No current will flow.
