NOTE: IS STUDYING OCHEM LAB 1 ABOUT "EXTRACTION"
1. Perform an online search to find the structures of the compounds in the questions that follow. Provide a method for separating the mixtures of two or three compounds, dissolved in a solvent diethyl ether. In each case one of the components will be a neutral compound. You should give your answer in the form of a flow chart. You only need to do parts “a" and “c". a. Benzophenone and tributylamine b. 4-Bromoaniline, 3-nitrobenzoic acid, and benzoin c. Fluorenone, octanoic acid, and dicyclohexylamine d. 1-Hexanol and 4-bromoanilineExplanation / Answer
ANSWER:
The question asks to solve only part 'a' and 'c'. Here we solve the two prolems:
(a) Benzophenone and tributylamine:: The mixture is in diethyl ether(given in question). Tributylamine ia a base and can be easily converted to water soluble salt by addition of an aqueous acid. So to the mixture add dilute aqueous acid. The salt formed by the amine will go to the aqueous layer and benzophenone will be present in ether layer. The two layers will be separated by a separatory funnel.
(c) Fluorenone, Octanoic acid and dicyclohexyl amine: The mixture contains an acid (octanoic acid) and a base (dicyclohexyl amine). To the mixture add dilute aqueous base (like NaCO3). Separate the two layers. Aqueous layer contains the acid in the form salt and ether layer contains fluorenone and the amine. To this mixture of fluorenone and dicyclohexyl amine add dilute aqueous acid. Separate the two layers. The aqueous layer contains the amine and ether contains fluorenone.
