How would the calculated concentration of the NaOHae) determined by you compare to the true concentration of the NaOH(ag) if an air bubble had been present in the buret? If this were the case, what impact would this have on your calculated molar mass of the unknown acid?

Explanation / Answer

1. If KHP was not fully dried before maing the primary standard solution. The actual amount of KHP in solution would be lower than the calculated value and thus lower volume of NaOH would be used for the titration. theretical moles of KHP is higher (incorrect) and would give higher moles of NaOH, therefore higher molarity of NaOH than actual value would be calculated in this experiment. The molar mass of unknown acid calculate from this NaOH solution would be then lower than actual value as moles of acid calculate from moles of NaOH used is higher.

2. If air bubble is present in buret, the net volume of NaOH added is calculate higher than actual valie added. moles of NaOH thus obtained is gretaer than true value and molarity of NaOH would be higher. The molar mass of unknown acid thus calculate would also be lower than actual value as moles of acid obtained from moles of NaOH is higher.
