Question
3. The purification of nickel from nickel ore is relatively simple chemically (stoichiometry) a) Nickel oxide is reacted with hydrogen to produce impure nickel metal. 600 g of nickel oxide is processed, with a yield of 85%. How much crude nickel is produced in this process? b) In the next step, the crude nickel is reacted with CO to produce a gaseous nickel The product from part a is treated by this process. If 350 g of Ni(CO) is produced, what is th yield of this reaction? compound. N? + CO ? Ni(CO)4Explanation / Answer
(a)
Mass of NiO = 600 g.
Molar mass of NiO = 74.7 g/mol
Moles of NiO = mass / molar mass = 600 / 74.7 = 8.03 mol
From the balanced equation,
1 mol of NiO forms 1 mol Ni
Then, 8.03 mol NiO forms 8.03 mol of Ni
But % yield is only 85 %
So, moles of Ni Formed = 8.03 * 85 /100 = 6.83 mol of Ni
Mass of crude Ni formed = moles * molar mass = 6.83 * 58.7 = 401. g.
(b)
From the balanced equation,
1 mol of Ni forms 1 mol of Ni(CO)4
Then,
6.83 mol of Ni forms 6.83 mol of Ni(CO)4
Mass of Ni(CO)4 formed = moles * molar mass = 6.83 *170.7 = 1166 g.
% yield = 350 * 100 / 1166. = 30.0 %
