Question
3. The qualitative analysis scheme in this exercise involved adding reagents to confirm the presence of cations, specifically, Ba2+, Pb2+, and Fe3+. Could this or a similar procedure be used for the qualitative analysis of anions? Review your observations and suggest a procedure that could be used to confirm the presence of the following anions. For each case, write the net ionic equation for the reaction involved. a. Chloride (CI-): b. Sulfate (SO) EXPERIMENT 13: QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF A GROUP OF CATIONSExplanation / Answer
3.
Qualitative analysis of anions can be achieved similar to the qualitative analysis of cations
a. Chloride (Cl-)
add AgNO3, forms AgCl as white precipitate
net-ionic equations,
Ag+ + Cl- --> AgCl
No precipitate with BaCl2 solution.
b. sulfate (SO4^2-)
add BaCl2 solution, forms white precipitate of BaSO4
net-ionic equation,
Ba2+ + SO4^2- --> BaSO4
Forms white precipitate with AgNO3
---
So by adding BaCl2 solution, only SO4^2- forms precipitate and not Cl-. Thu we can distinguish between the two anions.
