Question

match the type of indicator electrode to its descriptions

Indicator electrode types: metallic indicator electrode, class two electrode, class one electrode, class three electrode

descriptions

1. an electrode composed of a metal in contact with a slightly soluable salt of the metal, which is immersed in a solution containing the anion of the salt.

2. an electrode made of an inert material , which can serve as an electron exchange site for species in solution

3. An electrode made of a metal in contact with a slightly soluable salt of the metal and a slightly soluable salt of the metal cation to be determined. Both salts contain the same anion. It is immersed in a solution containing the metal cation of the second salt.

4. An electrode that is made of a metal that is immersed in a solution containing the ion of the metal

pls help.

Explanation / Answer

In Class one electrode a metal is in contact with a solution containing its own cation. Examples are Cu2+/Cu, Pb2+/Pb etc.

In class 2 electrode the metal is in contact with a slightly soluable salt of the metal, which is immersed in a solution containing the anion of the salt. Concentration of anion is excess. Example is calomel electrode.

In class 3 electrode a  metal is in contact with a slightly soluable salt of the metal and a slightly soluable salt of the metal cation to be determined(second metal). Both salts contain the same anion. It is immersed in a solution containing the metal cation of the second salt. Concentration of cation is excess.

When electrode is made of an inert material and it serve as an electron exchange site for species in solution they are termed as metallic indicator electrode.

Thus the matching are, 1- class 2 electrode

2- metallic indicator electrode.

3- class 3 electrode

4- class 1 electrode
