at least 3 sets of obser vations a s the avg value of k from these for your calculations there on. Problems 1) The initial rate of the reaction of nitrogen monoxide and oxygen was me asured at 25 ç using various concentrations of NO and Oz. The data collected is showured below 2NO (g)+02 (g)> 2NO2 (g) No 0.020 .040 0.020 Initial Rate 0.057 0.227 0.114 Experiment 0.025 0.025 0.050 Write a dummy rate law for the above reaction. Which two sets of observations would you choose to find the order of NO? Why? What is the order of the reaction with respect to NO? Show your work Which two sets of observations would you choose to find the order of 02? Why? What is the order of the reaction with respect to 02? Show your work What is the rate law for the reaction? What are the units of the rate constant? 167

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1 :

The dummy rate law for the reaction can be given simply looking at the reaction given in the picture.

So here :

Rate = k[NO]2[O2]

We will chose experiment 1 and experiment 2 to calculate the order of NO , as here the concentration of O2 is constant and that of NO has doubled.

When the concentration of NO has doubled , the rate of reaction has become four times . This indicates that the order of reaction is 2 with respect to NO.

We will chose experiment 1 and 3 to find the order of O2 , because in these the concentration of NO is constant.

So now when the concentration of O2 is doubled , the rate of reaction has also doubled. This indicates that the order of reaction is 1 with respect to O2.

So the rate law for this reaction will be given as :

Rate = k[NO]2[O2]

The overall order of the reaction is 3 . So the units of rate constant = M-2s-1
