Question

3. Consider a system tracking the concentration of calcium inside the cell (C) and the number of open channels (O). Their interaction is described in words below, and also by the following system of equa- tions: The signs of the constants k?, k2, k3, and k4 can be determined from the following description: (i) When a channel is open, it lets calcium into the cell (ii) Calcium promotes the opening of the channels (ii) In the absence of calcium, the channels close iv) Calcium is removed from (degraded) inside the cell the parameter.

Explanation / Answer

First note that O’ is the rate of change of the number of open-channel and C’ is the rate of change of concentration when the channel is open.

(1)When the channel is open it lets the calcium into the channel which means concentration of calcium is directly dependant on number of open channels thus, This must be the parameter K4.

(2)Since calcium promotes the opening of channel, the Rate of change of opened channel must depend upon concentration of calcium thus this parameter is K1.

(3)In the absence of calcium, channels close this means if the concentration of calcium (C) is zero the rate of change of number of open channels also decreases, thus this parameter must be -K2, negative sign indicate that number of open channels is reducing.

(4)If calcium is removed from inside of the cell ‘C’ decreases leading to decreases in rate of change of concentration thus this parameter must be K3.

Hope this Helps!!
