Question
14- What happens to the solubility of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) in water in each situation? (Answer increase, decrease, or no change.) a. The pressure of CO2 over the solution is increased. b. The temperature is increased. 15- Why does 02 have a greater solubility in blood than in water? 16- Which of the compounds is more soluble in water? CH,CH,CH,CH CH,C OH H C-OH Hexanoic acid Formic acid 17- Explain why propylene glycol is more soluble in water than isopropyl alcohol. ?? ?? CH,CHCH2OHCH CHCH, Propylene glyco Isopropyl alcoholExplanation / Answer
14 (a) When the pressure of CO2 over the solution is increased the solubility of CO2 increases. (The Henry law states that Sg = KH x Pg) Sg stands for the gas solubility, kH is the Henry's Law constant and Pg is the partial pressure of the gaseous solute.)
(b) When the temperature is increased, the solubility of CO2 decreases. (The effect of temperature on solubility can be explained on the basis of Le Chatelier's Principle.)
15. Alost 98 % of the O2 in blood are reversibly bound to hemoglobin, hence solubility increases (Le Chatelier's Principle), in water there is no stabilizing factor other than weak molecular interactions.
16. Formic acid is more soluble in water, due to the presence of lesser number of Alkyl chain, solubility is nearly inversely proportional to the length of alkyl chain as hydroponic repulsive forces increases as alkyl chain length increases. (note that water is hydrophilic)
17. Propylene glycol contains 2 -OH groups, so that it can form better H-bonding interaction with water molecules, hence more solubility.
