Question

N molecules absortb utraviolet ih but not visible light. la molecules absotb both visible and ultraviolet light. Which of the following statements explains the observations? a. More energy is required to make N2 molecules vibrate than is required to make 12 b. More energy is required to remove an electron from an 12 molecule than is c. Visible light does not produce transitions between electronic energy levels in the molecules vibrate. required to remove an electron from an N2 molecule. N2 molecule but does produce transitions in the 12 molecule. d. The molecular mass of h is greater than the molecular mass of N.

Explanation / Answer

The correct option is c.

Visible light does not produce transitions between electronic energy levels in the N2 molecule but does produce transitions in the I2 molecule.

It is because in the case of  N2 molecule much energy is needed due to the triple bond between them which can be provided by UV radiation of low wavelength whereas in the case of I2 molecule due to only single bond less energy is required for absorption to make excitation of electrons which can easily be got by visible range radiation of low wavwlength.
