Question
im confused. What is the objective of this?
This lab will provide information on how to prepare a buffer of a desired pH and concentration. Observations will be done on how buffers stabilize the pH of a solution even after adding a strong acid or strong base. Part A will introduce the procedures and calculations involved in preparing a buffer. One of three buffer solutions of a system of HC2H3O2 / NaC2H3O2 with varying pH will be prepared. This buffer will then be tested with a strong acid and strong base. Using the knowledge gained from Part A, another buffer will be prepared in Part B. This buffer will be prepared given a total buffer concentration, a target pH using the same HC2H3O2/NaC2H3O2 buffer system. In Part C, a titration will be done on the buffer from Part B with a strong base in order to determine its buffer capacity.
Explanation / Answer
Buffers are solutions that resist pH change upon addition of acids or bases. The main objective of this lab is to get familiarized with concept of buffers, how they are prepared and observing first hand how they resist pH change even on adding acids or bases.
Part A: preparation of buffer, here you are familiarised with calculations involved in preparing a buffer of a given pH. Buffers usually have a fixed pH or pH range. The pH of the prepared buffer can be varied within a range by changing the ratio of the salt (sodium acetate here) to the acid (acetic acid here) which will be observed in this part. After preparation a preliminary test of effect of addition of acid or base on the pH of the buffer will be observed.
Part B: Here buffer solution of a given target pH and concentration will be prepared.
Part C: buffer prepared in part B will be titrated against a strong base to determine buffer capacity (ammount of base or acid to be added to 1L of buffer to change it's pH by on unit).
This is to the best of my understanding. Hope this helps!
