Question

Rank the following compounds in order of decreasing boiling point: CH3CH2CH3, CH4, NH3, H2O

(A) CH3CH2CH3 > CH4 > NH3 > H2O

(B) H2O > NH3 > CH3CH2CH3 > CH4

(C) H2O > CH3CH2CH3 > CH4 > NH3

(D) NH3 > H2O > CH3CH2CH3 > CH4,

Rank the following compounds in order of decreasing boiling point: CH3CH2CH3, CH4, NH3, H2O

(A) CH3CH2CH3 > CH4 > NH3 > H2O

(B) H2O > NH3 > CH3CH2CH3 > CH4

(C) H2O > CH3CH2CH3 > CH4 > NH3

(D) NH3 > H2O > CH3CH2CH3 > CH4,

Explanation / Answer

H2O and NH3 can form hydrogen bond

CH3CH2CH3 and CH4 have london dispersion forces

So,

boiling point of H2O and NH3 is larger than boiling point of CH3CH2CH3 and CH4

Between H2O and NH3, hydrogen bond is stronger in H2O because of greater electronegativity of Oxygen as compared to Nitrogen

So, H2O has greater boiling point than NH3

Between CH3CH2CH3 and CH4, London dispersion force is stronger in CH3CH2CH3 due to its larger molar mass

so, CH3CH2CH3 has larger boiling point

Answer: B
