Question
Rank in order of how much energy is required from greatest energy to least energy. If you think that any take the same energy, circle their number in your ranking:
1. Rasing the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree C.
2. Rasing the temperature of 1 gram of water 2 degrees C.
3. Rasing the temperature of 2 grams of water 1 degree C.
4. Rasing the temperature of 1 gram of water 0 degree C to 100 degrees C.
5. Changing 1 gram of ice at 0 degrees C to 1 gram of water at 0 degrees C (melting).
6. Changing 2 grams of ice at 0 degrees C to 1 gram of water at 0 degree C with 1 gram of ice at 0 degrees C floating in it.
RANKING: ___, ____, _____, _____, ______, ______
Explanation / Answer
1. The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a substance from one temperature to another is given by:
Q= Cp m dT where Cp is specific heat(KJ/Kg), m is mass of body (Kg), dT is temperature difference
Q= 4.19 kJ/Kg X 1 X!0-3Kg X1 =4.19 J
2. Q= 2X 4.19 J (by above formula) = 8.38J
3. Q= 2X 4.19 J (by above formula) = 8.38J
4. Q = 100 X 4.19 J = 419 J
5.Heat required to just melt ice
Q= mass X latent heat
= 1 X334 J/g= 334 J
6. Heat required will be more than the 5 case as it has to heat more mass than previous case.
