Question

(12 pts) Consider two identical sealed flasks each containing 1 mol of methane gas. Flask 1 is placed in a bowl of ice water and flask 2 is placed in a bowl of boiling water. In which flask, 1 or 2, is the velocity of the particles greater? Explain in 1-2 sentences. a. b. In which flask, 1 or 2, is the volume of the particles greater? Explain in 1-2 sentences In which flask, 1 or 2, is the density of the gas sample greater? Explain in 1-2 sentences. c. d. In which flask. 1 or 2. is the pressure higher? Explain in 1-2 sentences.

Explanation / Answer

(a)

In flask 2, the velocity will be greater because the molecules have higher temperature, which means higher kinetic energy.

(b)

The volume occupied by gases is the same because the container is sealed and the molecules occupy all the available space.

(c)

Density is also same, because density = Mass/volume, and mass = Moles*MW.

Since the gas is methane in both flasks, and both contain only 1 mole, so the mass is same in both flasks, and since volume is same, so the density is also same.

(d)

The pressure is higher in flask 2 because in this flask, molecules move with higher velocities and hence hit the walls of the flask with greater force, hence imparting greater pressure.

Hope this helps !
