Question
Titration to Determine the Ksp A saturated solution of an unknown metal hydroxide was filtered to remove any excess solids. Then a 18.0 saturated solution was titrated to the end point with a 0.20 M solution of HCI. mL sa le of the HCI used as the titrant Tiuration of filtered satorated Filtered saturated solution If it took 12.80 mL of HCI to titrate to the endpoint, a) What is the molar concentration of hydroxide ion in the saturated solution? .56 b) What is the molar concentration of the unknown metal (II) cation in the saturated solution? .28 c) What is the Ksp for this unknown metal (II) hydroxide? 0878Explanation / Answer
a) M(OH)2(aq) + 2HCl(aq) -----> MCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l)
No of mol of HCl reacted = V*M
= 12.8*0.2
= 2.56 mmol
No of mol of M(OH)2 reacted = 2.56/2 = 1.28 mmol
concentration of OH- ions = n/V
= 1.28*2/18
= 0.14 M
b)
concentration of M2+ ions = n/V
= 1.28/18
= 0.07 M
Ksp = [M2+][OH-]^2
= 0.07*0.14^2
= 0.001372
= 1.37*10^-3
