Objective : To determine the melting point and the boiling point of various substances.
Introduction: Six different substances are given. Melting point of p-dichlorobenzzene, acetamide and solid mixture is to be determined. Also the boiling point of acetone, ethyl alcohol and acetone/ethyl alcohol mixture is to be determined.
A melting point is the temperature at which a solid substance changes its state to the liquid state.
A boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid substance boils and changes its state to the gaseous state.
Conclusion The melting points of p-dichlorobenzene, acetamide and solid mixture are 75.9, 55.2, 53.8 oC respectively and the boiling points of acetone, ethyl alcohol and acetone/ ethyl alcohol mixture are 72.7 oC respectively. The boiling points of ethyl alcohol and the mixture ethyl alcohol/acetone are higher than the boiling point of acetone due to formation of hydrogen bonds. Melting points / boiling points of a substance are higher when it has high molar mass or high intermolecular forces of attraction.
