2. The compound SO2 can be formed as a product according to the following equation. 4 FeS 7 02 >2 Fe2O3 +4SO2 a) Show that the equation above is balanced by listing the number of each type of atom in the reactant and product side of the equation in the table below (3 pts) Atom type Number on Reactant Side Number on Product Side Fe 4 How many moles of SO2 are formed when 5.25 moles of O2 react completely with an excess of FeS? (4 pts) b) c) How many grams of O2 are needed to form 10.0 grams of SO2? (4 pts)Explanation / Answer
a) balanced cemical equation is
4 FeS + 7O2 2Fe2O3 + 4SO2
b) According to balanced chemical equation 7 mole of O2 produce 4 mole of SO2 molar retio between O2 to SO2 is 7:4 therefore 5.25 mole of O2 produce SO2 = 5.25 X 4 / 7 = 3 mole
from 5.25 mole of O2 produce 3 mole of SO2
c) molar mass of SO2 = 64.066 g/mol
no. of mole = gm of compound / molar mass
no. of mole of SO2 = 10 / 64.066 = 0.156 mole
According to balanced chemical equation 7 mole of O2 produce 4 mole of SO2 molar retio between O2 to SO2 is 7:4 therefore to produce 0.156 mole of SO2 requied O2 = 0.156 X 7 / 4 = 0.273 mole
0.273 mole O2 required
molar mass of O2 = 32 g/mol
gm of O2 required = 8.736 gm
gm of compound = no. of mole X molar mass
gm of O2 required = 0.273 X 32 = 8.736 gm
