Explanation / Answer

The atomic mass of Cu-65 is 64.9278 amu. Calculate the nuclear binding energy of this

nucleus and the corresponding nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Mass number = 65

No. of protons = 29, then

Neutrons = Mass number – proton number = 29 protons and 65-29= 36 neutrons are present

Mass of proton = 1.00783

Mass of neutrón = 1.00867

Total mass = 36* 1.00783+ 29*1.00867= 65.53331amu

The mass defect:

64.9278-65.53331= -0.60551amu

Mass = 0.60551/(6.022*10^23) = 1.00549*10^-24 g or -1.00549*10^-27 kg

Energy released (Einstein E = mC^2)

E = m*C^2 = -1.00549*10^-27 * (3*10^8)^2 = -9.049*10^-11 J

Nuclear binding energy = E = -9.049*10^-11 J

Nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Nucleon = neutron + protons = 65

E per nucleon = E / nucleon =( -9.049*10^-11)/( 65) = 1.3921*10^-12 J/nucleon

change to kJ/mol

( 1.3921*10^-12)(6.022*10^23)/(1000) = 838322620 kJ/mol
