Question
MYSTERY BUBBLES
If a glass of fresh cold tap water is placed on a windowsill in the sun, small bubbles often form along the sides and/or bottom of the glass. What is primarily in these bubbles?
Choose one of the following, and clearly explain your reasoning for the choice:
A) hydrogen molecules
B) water vapor molecules
C) oxygen and nitrogen molecules
D) oxygen and hydrogen molecules
E) oxygen and hydrogen atoms
As you discuss your reasoning, consider the following. Imagine that you boil the water, pour it into a container while hot and put a lid on it. Then you allow the closed container to cool in the refrigerator. Now when you pour the cold water into a glass and place it on the windowsill, the bubbles do not form. Explain how this experiment reinforces your choice above.
Finally, explain how the concept addressed by this question relates to the issue of "thermal pollution," which may occur for example when water from power plants or other industries is discharged into a lake or stream, resulting in the death of aquatic organisms. Note that this water is usually not contaminated in any way, but was simply used as "cooling water"--in other words, it was used to absorb the heat from an industrial process, and may even have been cooled back down to normal temperatures before being discharged into the lake or stream.
Explanation / Answer
answer: C
When u kept glass of water in the sun nitrogen and oxygen gas came out of the water in the form of tiny bubbles.becasue warmer water can dissolve less gas at lower pressure than in cold water. In this situation if atmospheric pressure decreases as water warmsup, the equlibrium between water molecule is unbalanced and then air leaving the water and they cameout as bubbles.
when u boil the water , most of nitrogen and oxygen will rise and expand , when ever u cool it and covered with lid, only the vapour of water come back to the form of liquid water and it has no time to dissolve more gases in it. so when kept in sun again there will be any bubbles formed.
when water is used as coolant in power plants and it comes back to the neutral water bodies, at higher temperature the supply of oxygen will decrease and it effects badly the composition of ecosystem.
