Question
I’ve been to my chemistry lecture and I wasn’t able to understand these key points. Could anyone answer this set of questions explain their answer in their own words? Please remember Chegg's 5 subsets per question policy, which means that you must go over all of these problems (1, 2, 3) instead of answering only one. 1.) Identify the process that is spontaneous A) rusting of iron B) electrolysis C) photosynthesis D) bread rising E) burning gasoline 2) The of the universe increases. Law of Thermodynamics states that for any spontaneous reaction, the entropy 3) Consider a reaction that has a positive H and a positive S. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A) This reaction will be spontaneous only at low temperatures. B) This reaction will be spontaneous at all temperatures. C) This reaction will be nonspontaneous at all temperatures D) This reaction will be nonspontaneous only at low temperatures. E) It is not possible to determine without more information
Explanation / Answer
Ans 1 : A) rusting of iron
Any reaction that occurs by its own , without any external stimuli is called as spontaneous reaction.
So here rusting of iron is a spontaneous reaction.
Ans 2 : Second
According to the second law of thermodynamics , the entropy of universe in a spontaneous reaction always increases. The energy can change from one form to the other.
Ans 3 : D) the reaction will be non spontaneous only at low temperatures.
The reaction that has positive enthalpy and positive entropy is sponteneous at high temperatures , so it will be non spontaneous at low temperatures.
