61 3. Answer the following questions reparding glycolysis and a) ir glycolysis and pluconeogenesis were hot differentially cycie where both occur at the same time could ensue (i.e. glucose would be gluconeogenesis). What would be the cost, in ATP equivaients, of this futle cycle for the cel? b) Why cant gluconeogenesis be the exact reversal of glycolysis? c) A mutant yeast is discovered where the glycolytic pathway is shorter because of the presence of a new enzyme catalyzing the reaction below. Would the shortening of glycolysis in this way benefit the cel? Explain. NAD NADH+H Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate H,0 3-phosphoglycerate

Explanation / Answer

3)a.glycolysis is breaking of glucose into pyruvate acid under anaerobic condition , during the process of glycolysis ,there is consumption of 2 atp and 2atp and 2 nadh are produced .there is overall gain of 4 atp.in contrast to this process gluconeogenesis consume 4 atp per molecule .during conversion of glucose into pyruvate acid.there will be no net gain of atp if the whole process occur simultaneously.

But if we consider further steps of glycolysis that is kreb cycle ,then 38 atp.will be produced.and net gain of atp will be 38-4=34atp.

3 b) gluconeogenesis cannot be the reversal of glycolysis because glycolysis is done by each and every cell whereas gluconeogenesis is limited to liver only and it also doesn't occur frequently ,it occurs only in extreme condition.glycolysis occurs in cytoplasm but gluconeogenesis is occurs in mitrochondria as well.as cytoplasm.there are many steps in glycolysis which is not possible for gluconeogenesis.

3) c) In general.reaction of glycolysis when we convert glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate into 1,3 di phosphoglycerate there is net gain of 1 NADP that is 2 ATP and then in next step.when we convert 1,3 phosphoglycerate into 3 phosphoglycerate it produce 1 atp means there is gain of 3 ATP.

Now,if we consider the new condition ,where there is direct conversion of glyceraldehyde 1,3 phosphate into 3 phosphoglycerate only one 1 NADP is produce that is only 2 ATP are produced, means there is loss of 1 ATP .hence shortening of process of glycolysis in this way is not beneficial.
