Question
The following are rate data for the reaction A + 3B AB3
Exp. [A] [B] rate (M•s)
1 0.50 0.25 0.00156
2 1.50 1.00 0.005625
3 0.75 0.25 0.00352
4 1.50 0.25 0.01406
5 0.50 1.00 0.00625
From this data, determine the following. Explain and show your work as to how you arrived at your answers.
a. The order with respect to A: ________________ order
b. The order with respect to B: ________________ order
c. The overall reaction order ________________ order
d. The rate constant (with unites) k = ________________
Explanation / Answer
For the given data
let the rate equation be,
rate = k[A]^x.[B]^y
with x and y be order with respect to A and B, k is rate constant
(a) from Expt 1 and 3
rate 1/rate 3 = 0.00156/0.00352 = (0.5/0.75)^x
taking log on both sides,
x = 2
The order with respect to A = 2
(b) expt 1 and 5
rate 1/rate 5 = 0.00156/0.00625 = (0.25/1)^y
taking log on both sides,
y = 1
The order with respect to B = 1
c. The overall reaction order = 3
d. The rate constant k = 0.00156/(0.5)^2.(0.25) = 0.025 M^-2.s^-1
