Question

There are several chemical classification tests that can discern the difference between aldehydes and ketones, and also provide partial structure determination. Identify the components of the Schiff's test reagent by dragging the reagent labels into the box.

Click on an item, then drag it into the box. Contents of Schiff's test reagent sulfuric acid ethanol potassium iodide rosaniline hydrochloride ammonium hydroxide 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine silver nitrate sodium bisulfite sodium hydroxide odine

Explanation / Answer

Schiff's reagent is a dilute solution of rosaniline hydrochloride whose red colour has been discharged bypassing sulphur dioxide. Aldehydes when treated with schiff's reagent ( magenta solution in sulphurous acid) restore its pink colour. ketones do not give this test.
