Question
Of the energy resources shown in the graph below, which ones are not sustainable? Briefly explain why each of items you have listed is not sustainable. Policy makers around the world arc facing what they describe as an energy "trilemma"-having to make energy choices based on three possibly competing sustainability dimensions for any given energy system: energy security, social equity, and, environmental impact. How do each of these dimensions relate to current energy consumption trends and availability of resources in the United States? What is electricity? How do turbine power plants generate electricity? Describe two things that must happen in order to get this electricity to your house in a reliable fashion once it has been generated in a power plant? Compare at least two advantages and two disadvantages of using natural gas instead of coal as the fuel in an electric power plant. Include both economic and environmental considerations in your answer. Describe two problems associated with the current US electrical grid system. Describe at least one type of technology or practice inspired by the concept of building a "smart grid". How does this technology or practice help create a more sustainable energy system?Explanation / Answer
1) All renewable energy sources i.e. solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and ocean energy are sustainable as they are stable and available in plenty and can be renewed.
A non-renewable resource or non-sustainable resource does not renew itself at a sufficient rate for sustainable economic extraction in meaningful human time-frames.
Examples are oil, coal, gas, wood, nuclear.
They are non-sustainable because they comes from fossil fuels, and fossil fuels take millions of years to form.
They cannot be replaced, means once they are used up, we can not restore them again.
