Question
Silver chloride, AgCI, is a sparingly soluble solid. Answer the following questions about a saturated solution prepared by placing solid silver chloride in a 1.67 times 10^-5 M NaCI(aq) solution. At some temperature, the silver ion concentration, [Ag+], was found to be 6.81 times 10^-6 M. What is the concentration of chloride ions, [Cl^-], in the resulting solution? What is the molar solubility of silver chloride, AgCI, in 1.67 times 10^-5 M NaCI? The solubility of AgCI(s) in pure water is 1.26 times 10^-5 M. Did the solubility increase or decrease in 1.67 times 10^-5 M NaCI solution? What is the solubility product constant, K_sp, for silver chloride, AgCI?Explanation / Answer
d) given molar solubility of AgCl is pure water
S = 1.26 x 10-5 M(given in C)
AgCl <=======> Ag+ + Cl-
Ksp = [Ag+][Cl-]
Ksp = [1.26 x 10-5][1.26 x 10-5]
Ksp = 1.6 x10-10
a)
Finding the solubiltity of [Cl-] in resulting solution
NaCl has Chlorides in common so there will be common ion effect
Concentration of [Ag+] = X
Concentration of [Cl-] = X+1.67x10-5
Using Ksp = 1.6 x10-10
Ksp = [Ag+][Cl-]
Ksp = (x)(x+1.67x10-5)
We have to solve for X
1.6 x10-10 = (x)(x+1.67x10-5)
by solving it we get
X = 6.8x10-6 M
[Cl-] = 6.8x10-6 + 1.67x10-5 = 2.35 x10-5 M
Concentration of chloride in resulting solution = [Cl-]= 2.35 x10-5 M
b)
Molar solubility of AgCl was found in above problem = x =6.8x10-6 M
Molar solubility of AgCl in 1.67 x10^-5 M NaCl = 6.8x10-6 M
C)
The solubility AgCl decreased
