Question
Is this correct?
For full credit, your answer must include: Both chair conformations of each molecule The number of gauche butane interactions in each chair, clearly labeled in the manner we did in lecture A calculation showing how you arrived at the difference in energy between the two isomers. To make the grader's life easier, please use these templates with pre-numbered carbons for your drawings. You do not need to draw all the hydrogens on each chair, just the methyl groups. Number of GBs: 3 strain energy: 2.4 kcal/mol number of GBs: 2 strain energy: 1.6 kcal/mol Number of GBs: 2 strain energy: 1.6 kcal/mol Number of GBs: 0 strain energy: 0 kcal/mol Difference in energy between the two isomers: 1.6 kcal/mol (show calculation below)Explanation / Answer
In the first conformation for cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane
Both the chairs would have 2 gauche butane interactions.
The calculation thus would give 1.6 kcal/mol for both conformations.
In the second for trans-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane
The first chair with 2 axial methyls would have 4 gauche butane interactions, so total energy would be = 4 x 0.8 = 3.2 kcal/mol
the flipped one with two equatorial would have no GB and thus energy as calculated above is 0 kcal/mol
you may add these changes to your details.
