Question
This is the Le Chatelier's Principal section of my gen chem 2 lab. I am so lost with eqilibriums!
1). Assuming the following reaction is at equilibrium: CH3COOH(aq) + OH-(aq) <----> CH3COO-(aq) +H20(l)
a. What happens to the equilibrium if more OH- is added?
b. What happens to the equilibrium if the solution is diluted?
c. What happens to the equilibrium if HCL is added?
3. Assuming the following reaction is at equilibrium: A+B <---> C Delta H= +180 kJ/mol
a. I this reaction exothermic or endothermic in the forward direction?
b. What will happen if the heat was added to the solution?
c. What will happen if the solution is colled?
Explanation / Answer
1
a when you add more OH- reaction will move in such a way that it tries to decrease the concentration of OH-
so reaction will move right side means farward direction
b
if you dilute the more dissociation of Ch3COOH will increase so reaction will move right side farward
c
if you add more HCl H+ will protonate the acetate ion so reaction will shift left side
means towards reactant side
3
a
Delta H= +ve means endo thermic reaction
b
if you add more heat reaction will be move to deacrease the heat
so farward reaction is favoured
c
if you cool the reaction backward reaction is favoured
