Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, complete and upload this Energy Use Table Worksheet and write 300–500 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments.
You want to be part of the Green Revolution and are looking to find ways to reduce your energy use. But first, you must know what your energy use is. Complete the following:
Complete the table to keep track of your energy use for 3 days this week. Include the following:
What types of energy or fuel did you use (including any renewable sources of energy, such as wind, hydroelectric, solar, etc.)?
What was the purpose of the energy or fuel use (heating or cooling, recreational, etc.)?
Save your chart, and present it with 300-500 words containing the following information:Which primary energy source does your electric company use to generate electricity (coal, nuclear, renewables, etc.)?
Cite the source for this information.
What changes could you make to decrease your energy use?
What changes could you make to increase your energy efficiency?
Which changes will be most difficult for you to implement? Why do you think so?
Explanation / Answer
Sources of Energy: Renewable sources - Renewable energy sources are natural (Sun, Wind, Water, Tides, biomass, etc.,) The energy from renewable sources is the cleanest form of energy as they have minimum carbon emissions and these sources can be replenished.
Non-Renewable sources - Non-renewable sources cannot be replenished. They are not eco-friendly and some of the non-renewable sources are fossil fuels, natural gas, oil and coal.
Our lives starting from boarding a cab, for reaching the university in time till we switch off our lights at night, are quite dependant on the energy resources.
The primary source of energy used daily for transportation is fossil fules in the form of petroleum. This is a non-renewable source of energy. Liquified Petroleum gas is used for cooking purposes, this is also a non renewable source of energy. The computers, televisions, and all other electronic gadgets work by the utilization of electricity, which can be either hydroelectricpower (water- Renewable source) or thermal power (Coal-Non renewable).
Changes we could make to decrease your energy use:
1. Public transit is also a great way to limit your energy consumption. Many public modes of transport run on eco-friendly fuels.
2. We can use gadgets with green power like computers monitors with energy svaing features.
3. We can make it a habit to reduce the energy usage at home by turning off the lights, fans and ACs when not in use.
4. We can avoid water wastage and indirectly the power usage which is required for drawing out water from the bore wells.
5. We can also switch to LED bulbs instead of normal ones as these are energy saving.
Changes to increase energy efficiency:
1.We can increase the energy efficiency of day to day appliances by follwing simple steps like:
Adjusting the refriferator temperature to increase efficiency, keeping the refrigerator door closed etc.,
2.Usage of power strips with only a limited number of outlets is another way to increase energy efficiency. Power strips are turned off when not in use.
3.We can use the Sun's light as a source of light at home during the day time.
4. Effective control of the thermostat temperature is another method to increase energy efficiency.
What changes could you make to increase your energy efficiency?
Which changes will be most difficult for you to implement? Why do you think so?
